A Four Letter Word That Begins With The Letter 'F'

That's right...SNOW!!  We woke up to below freezing weather and a covering of snow this morning.  Not Good!  We've been diligently working on our Conservatory greenhouse kit from MyGreenhouseKit.com, and the cold is tenderizing my soft supple hands.  But since I last posted, we've made quite a bit of progress, thanks to some help from our neighbour Bill, and our dearest friends Dan and Cynthia.
My Lovely Leslie, and our dearest friends, Dan and Cynthia.
Next up...the panels.  This is where I am MOST thankful for having a tall friend.

We'll keep you up to date on this project/learning experience as events warrant.

Take care.

Time To Move On

Okay, so Thanksgiving in Canada is over now...time to move on.  That was some good turkey and fixin's though.  Thanks to my lovely wife Leslie.

There's frost on the ground this morning. FROST!! Well, I guess it had to end sometime. I also guess that, since I haven't begun putting together the greenhouse kit yet, I'll be working in the chill of the day. At least it's supposed to be sunny today.  I'm truly looking forward to some late season gardening. Still not sure what that'll be like, but the prospects of growing vegetables that are safe to eat in late fall is quite intoxicating.  Mmmmm...fresh carrots and squash.

I'll keep you posted as to my progress, and will upload pictures as I can.

Take care.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

The sun is shining, it's warm out (19 C, 66 F), and everything is just wonderful.  What a great day!  I'm looking at our back yard where our new Solexx Conservatory greenhouse, which we purchased from MyGreenhouseKit.com, will be.  This is a 16 L x 8 D x 9.5 H foot professional greenhouse and it will have 111 square feet of shelving.  That's almost as many veggies as our grocer's produce section has!!  I'm so please at the prospect of growing vegetables in our own backyard.

We've put stakes at each corner of the greenhouse's eventual location, and we've used my seldomely seen high school math skills to make sure that it is square.  Pythagoras was my hero this weekend. The quare root of 16 ft squared plus 8 ft squared is about 17 ft 10.5 inches.  Yeah...that looks about right.

We'll be digging up a rectangle in the lawn in order to build a border, and filling that with gravel, so we can get a good base to build the frame on.  This will also allow for some easy drainage whent he inevitable rain and snowmelt starts to run.  The uneveness of our lot is the reason we have to create a box for our surface.  The lot slopes down towards the West, so we have to lift one end, lest our rounder vegetables roll to one end of the greenhouse.  Geez, what a mess that would be.

Well, I'll post pictures as soon as I can.  But I'm sure they won't do the project justice.  This is gonna be big.

Take care, and I hope you're having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend too.

Visual Basic 2008 and Focus Programming - Intro

These days I'm learning Visual Basic 2008 (VB2008), along with Focus programming on an IBM mainframe.  Two very distinct programming languages and really interesting.

VB2008 is a natural extension of the Excel Visual Basic for Applications, which I use in Microsft Excel.  The coolest part about VBA is that most of the work is done for you...all you have to know is how to manipulate the data in your worksheets...unless, of course, you want to get all "fancy" and add forms, messages, and buttons in your program.  ( I like to add those things, so I have learn continuously in order to keep my hunger satiated.)  One of the most powerful features in VBA and in almost any programming language is the ability to perform loops.  That is doing one thing over and over until all of your requirements are handled.  I absolutely LOVE loops.  I haven't learned how to do loops in Focus yet.  I'm not even sure they exist.  I think I'm going to have to get into that part of the language sooner than later, now that I've asked the question.

Darn my enquiring mind.

I'll keep you all updated on how I make out.

Take care.

A Jamie Oliver quick tutorial on Spaghetti and Meatballs

This is a less than 9 minute video I found on You Tube, which shows Jamie Oliver (I've been a great fan of his for some time) making a real-time spaghetti and meatballs dinner.   Looks absolutely scrumptious!
I hope you enjoy as much as I did.  Bon apetit.

Always Be Learning

This is my first blog on learning...

...I'm really looking forward to taking you on my path to a higher education.  I'll be sharing with you my experiences with various learning media as I go through each course.  I'm a long time customer of the Learning Company and, as such, these will be my focus.  I hope you'll find these blogs useful and entertaining.  I'll also provide links to resources as I find them.

Please follow along as I dig deep into Egyptology, lifelong heath, the cosmos, the basics of music, and a better understanding of wine (I like that one).
